FSC Certified Paperboard: What It Is and Why It Matters
FSC certified paperboard – FSC certified paperboard appears on more packaging specifications every year, but the label is often treated as a badge rather than a verifiable claim. We use FSC certified paperboard as standard across our rigid boxes, folding cartons and corrugated packs, and we supply chain-of-custody documentation on request. This guide explains what the certification actually covers and how to check it.
“FSC-certified” appears on packaging specs everywhere, but it is often treated as a badge rather than a verifiable claim. We use FSC-certified paperboards as standard. Here is what the certification actually covers, why it matters to buyers, and how to talk about it without overclaiming.
What FSC Certification Means
FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification traces paper and board back to forests managed to defined environmental and social standards — covering biodiversity protection, workers’ rights, and replanting practices. When board is FSC-certified, the fibre can be traced through the supply chain from forest to finished box.
It is a chain-of-custody claim, not a claim that the box is recycled. Those are two different things, and mixing them up is the most common packaging sustainability error.
FSC vs Recycled vs Recyclable
FSC-certified
Fibre comes from responsibly managed forests, traced through the supply chain. Says nothing about recycled content.
Recycled content
The board contains post-consumer or post-industrial fibre. Often paired with FSC certification.
Recyclable
The finished box can be processed by recycling streams — but only if coatings and laminates allow it.
Why Buyers Care
Retailer and marketplace requirements
Many beauty, apparel, and home retailers include responsible-sourcing language in supplier agreements. FSC certification is the most widely recognised way to satisfy it.
Customer expectation
Shoppers increasingly read packaging claims — and they are quick to spot vague ones. A specific, traceable certification carries more weight than generic “eco-friendly” wording, which is especially relevant for cosmetics and home fragrance brands whose customers ask about sourcing.
It does not have to cost more
Because FSC board is widely produced, specifying it is usually cost-neutral on standard runs. The premium appears mainly with unusual weights or speciality finishes.
The Part Most Brands Miss
A box made from FSC board can still be hard to recycle if it is finished with heavy plastic lamination, large magnets, or mixed-material inserts. If recyclability is part of your claim, the structure matters as much as the board:
• Choose aqueous or water-based coatings over plastic lamination where possible
• Use paperboard or moulded pulp inserts instead of foam — see our insert selection guide
• Avoid mixed materials that cannot be separated by the customer
What We Can and Cannot Claim
We use FSC-certified paperboards as our standard base material. What we will not do is help you imply more than the certification supports — vague claims are a reputational and, in some markets, a legal risk. If you need help wording packaging copy accurately, ask us and we will tell you what the materials genuinely support.

What FSC Certified Paperboard Guarantees
The Forest Stewardship Council sets standards for how forests are managed, covering replanting, biodiversity, worker safety and the rights of local communities. When paperboard is described as FSC certified, the fibre can be traced back through the supply chain to a certified forest or to controlled sources. That traceability is the point of the label.
There are three labels buyers commonly see. FSC 100% means all the fibre comes from certified forests. FSC Mix means the fibre is a mix of certified, recycled and controlled wood. FSC Recycled means the fibre is reclaimed material. When you specify FSC certified paperboard for a packaging project, ask which of the three applies, because they carry different claims.
FSC Certified Paperboard vs Recycled Board
Recycled board and FSC certified paperboard answer different questions. Recycled board reduces the demand for virgin fibre, but the board itself is often grey or brown and needs a full wrap to look premium. FSC certified paperboard is usually a virgin or mixed sheet, which prints with better colour fidelity and holds a smoother surface for foil and spot UV.
The two are not mutually exclusive. A pack can use FSC Recycled board, which is both certified and reclaimed. For premium rigid boxes the outer wrap is normally FSC Mix or FSC 100% coated paper, while the greyboard core is recycled. That combination gives a printable surface and a lower footprint, and it is what we quote by default.
FSC Certified Paperboard and Retailer Requirements
Large retailers and marketplaces increasingly ask suppliers to declare the fibre source of packaging. A specification that names FSC certified paperboard, with the certificate code and the label type, answers that question before it is asked. It also supports sustainability claims in product listings without straying into greenwashing.
If you sell into the EU or the US, keep the certificate code for the mill that supplied your board and the chain-of-custody record for the converting factory. Those two documents are what an auditor will ask for. For every order that specifies FSC certified paperboard, those documents are passed on with the shipping documents.
How to Specify FSC Certified Paperboard in a Quote
In your enquiry, state the label you need, the board grade and the print method. For example: FSC Mix 350 gsm coated art paper, offset printed, matte lamination. That single line removes the ambiguity that leads to substitutions, and it lets us price the certified sheet directly rather than guessing.
If the budget is tight, ask which parts of the pack carry the claim. Marking the outer wrap as FSC certified paperboard while the inner fitment uses standard recycled board is a common and perfectly acceptable approach. We will show the cost difference for each option so the decision is yours.
Questions Buyers Ask About FSC Certified Paperboard
Does certification raise the price? Usually by a small percentage, because certified pulp carries a premium and the administrative chain of custody has a cost. On a typical rigid box the difference is a few cents per unit, which is small next to the marketing value of a defensible claim.
Can you print the FSC logo on my box? It depends on the board and on the label your retailer or compliance team needs, so it is confirmed against the certificate before we quote. Where it applies, we place the logo at the approved size and supply a proof. If you would like FSC certified paperboard quoted for your next run, send the dimensions and the label you need.
FSC certified paperboard or FSC cardboard: is there a difference?
Buyers often ask for FSC cardboard, while mills, spec sheets and certification documents say FSC certified paperboard. They are describing the same material. Cardboard is the everyday word for the heavier paper stock that boxes are made from; in the trade the same stock is called paperboard, and the term covers everything from thin folding carton board up to the thick greyboard used in rigid boxes. So an FSC certified cardboard box and an FSC certified paperboard box are making the same claim.
The wording matters for a practical reason. When you ask a supplier for FSC cardboard, what you actually need is the FSC claim for the specific stock used on your job, plus the chain-of-custody documentation that connects that stock back to a certified forest. If a supplier quotes FSC cardboard but cannot produce the paperwork for the board they intend to run, the word is doing no work.
In our own quotes we use paperboard, because that is the term that matches the mill documentation you will be asked to file. If your buyer, your retailer or your compliance team uses the word cardboard, the certificate we supply will still read correctly against it. If you need the exact claim wording for an audit or a retailer onboarding form, tell us and we will match it.

Questions buyers ask about FSC paperboard
How do I know the board is genuinely FSC-certified and not just a claim?
Ask for the chain-of-custody documentation for your specific order. It links the finished packaging back to certified sources through every step of the supply chain. If a supplier cannot produce that paperwork for your job, the claim is not verifiable.
Does FSC-certified board cost more?
There is usually a modest premium over equivalent non-certified stock, and it varies by board type and current mill pricing. We quote it separately so you can see the actual difference rather than an averaged-up figure.
Is FSC the same thing as recycled?
No, and this is the most common mix-up. FSC is about where the fibre comes from and how the forest is managed. Recycled describes the fibre's previous life. A board can be recycled without being FSC-certified, and FSC-certified without being recycled.
Which FSC board types do you work with?
FSC-certified greyboard for rigid boxes, kraft and duplex boards for folding cartons and mailer boxes, art paper for printed wraps, and specialty stocks for premium finishes. We will confirm what is available for your specific structure before quoting.
Can I put the FSC logo on my packaging?
Only if your order qualifies and you follow the labelling rules attached to the certification. We will tell you honestly what your specific job allows rather than printing a logo you are not entitled to use.
Does FSC certification make packaging more recyclable?
Certification covers responsible sourcing, not recyclability. Recyclability depends on the material mix and the finishing applied. Uncoated paperboard recycles easily; heavy lamination or mixed-material inserts can complicate it, and we will flag that when we recommend a structure.
