Structures We Build for Custom Tea Packaging Boxes

Tea comes in wildly different formats — loose leaf in caddies, pressed cakes, sachets, pyramid bags, bottled cold brew — and the box has to hold the format, not the other way round. These are the structures we run most often:

Lid & base gift sets

The classic format for custom tea packaging boxes: a rigid two-piece case wrapped in printed art paper, usually with a paper or EVA insert holding two to six caddies. It is the format retail buyers expect for premium loose leaf ranges and the one that photographs best in a gifting display.

Drawer boxes

A rigid outer case with one or two sliding trays — the format we recommend for custom tea packaging boxes when a set mixes formats — loose leaf tins beside sachets, or a teapot alongside a caddy. Drawers let a customer see the whole range at once, which is why subscription and sampler sets favour them.

Printed tea tubes and caddies

Cylindrical tubes are the most space-efficient format for single-origin and matcha lines, and the easiest to line with a food-safe barrier. We produce custom tea packaging boxes in diameters matched to standard tin sizes so your existing tins drop straight in.

Paper bags and carriers

Matching carriers turn custom tea packaging boxes into a complete retail set — the same print, the same board, one production run. For tea shops this is usually the piece that ends up photographed by customers, so it is worth treating as a branding item rather than an afterthought.

Freshness and Protection

Tea is a food product with a shelf life, and packaging that ignores this fails at exactly the wrong moment — after the customer has paid. Three things matter when we engineer custom tea packaging boxes:

  • Barrier, not just structure. An aluminium-lined foil or a coated liner inside the box is what actually holds freshness; the outer box protects the liner. We size compartments around the inner pouch, not around the tea.
  • Aroma migration. Strong aromatic teas and flavoured blends transfer scent into uncoated board. Where this matters we specify barriers or separators between compartments.
  • Static load. Caddies are dense. A gift set stacked six high in a warehouse puts real pressure on the bottom box, so board thickness is chosen for stacking, not for how it looks in a photo.

Materials, Printing & Finishes

The materials behind custom tea packaging boxes are chosen for two audiences at once — the buyer who judges with their hands and the regulator who reads the label:

  • Board: greyboard for rigid cases and caddy trays, folding carton board for sleeves and sachet cartons. We work with FSC-certified paperboard as standard. See our notes on FSC-certified paperboard.
  • Food contact: any surface that touches loose leaf or a sachet is specified as food-contact safe, and we can reference the applicable requirements rather than asking you to take our word for it — the FDA food contact substances framework is the usual starting point for US-bound orders.
  • Printing: full-colour CMYK with Pantone matching for brand colours. Tea packaging lives or dies on colour accuracy — a gold that reads yellow under retail lighting undoes a premium price, so every run is checked against the signed proof.
  • Finishes: hot foil stamping, spot UV, embossing and debossing, matte or soft-touch lamination. Foil on a matte board is the combination premium tea brands return to most.
  • Inserts: paper dividers, EVA, or moulded pulp — detailed in our packaging inserts guide.

Who Orders Custom Tea Packaging Boxes

Different tea businesses need very different things from the same box. These are the four groups we build for most:

  • Specialty and single-origin tea brands — small, frequent runs where the box carries the story: origin, harvest, tasting notes. Low starting quantities matter more than unit price at this stage.
  • Gifting and corporate programmes — seasonal sets built to a fixed delivery date. If yours lands in a holiday window, see how we plan seasonal production on our advent calendar boxes page — the timing logic is identical.
  • Tea rooms, cafés and hotels — retail-ready boxes and matching bags that customers carry out of the shop.
  • Subscription and sampler sellers — drawer and multi-compartment formats that travel well and keep small-batch production economical.

MOQ, Samples and Getting the Colour Right

Custom tea packaging boxes start at 200 pieces. A physical sample follows a simple sequence we recommend for every tea project: we produce your structure in plain board, you load it with your actual caddies or pouches, and only then do we print. Structure problems found at this stage cost nothing; the same problem found after printing costs a full run.

Artwork support for custom tea packaging boxes is free. If you have a designer we will prepare dielines and specs for them; if you do not, our team can lay out the panels from your logo and brand assets. Either way you approve a printed proof before anything is manufactured.

How Ordering Works

The same three steps as every box we produce:

  1. Send your tins, pouches or dimension list. We will tell you which structures fit and where a standard format will not work.
  2. Approve a physical sample. Plain structure first, printed proof second — you hold the box before committing.
  3. Production with photo QC. Five inspection checkpoints from incoming board to final packing, with photos at each stage, then export shipping or delivery to your forwarder.

Custom Tea Packaging Boxes — FAQs

What is the minimum order for custom tea packaging boxes?

200 pieces, the same minimum as our full range. Because inserts and compartments are produced as separate components, MOQ applies to the finished set rather than to each tray or caddy.

Can you make the box to fit tins we already have?

Yes — and it is the usual starting point. Send us the tin diameter, height and quantity per set, and we design the insert and outer case around your existing stock so you are not paying for new tins.

Do you make tea packaging for loose leaf, sachets and pressed cakes?

All three. Loose leaf usually ships in a lined caddy inside a rigid set, sachets in a folding carton with a shelf-ready display, and pressed cakes in a lid & base or book-style structure with a shallow insert.

How do you keep printed colours consistent across reorders?

We keep colour records per client — board grades, ink references and the approved proof for every job. A reorder two seasons later is matched against those records rather than re-matched by eye, so your custom tea packaging boxes stay the same colour year after year.

Can the box be recycled or plastic-free?

Paper structures, paper inserts and water-based coatings can be fully paper-recyclable. Where a barrier layer is required for freshness, we will tell you honestly what that means for recyclability in your market rather than claiming a plastic-free result the liner cannot deliver.
