Custom Chocolate Packaging Boxes — Truffle Trays, Bar Sleeves & Gift Sets

Chocolate is the one product people buy with their hands before they read a word. We manufacture custom chocolate packaging boxes for chocolate brands, confectionery wholesalers and corporate gifting programmes — rigid truffle trays, magnetic gift sets, printed bar sleeves and window cartons built around the piece you actually sell. Runs start at 200 pieces with free samples, so you can load real product into the box and approve it before a single sheet is printed.

Structures We Build for Custom Chocolate Packaging Boxes

A chocolate box has one job before it has any other: hold each piece still. Everything else — the gold foil, the ribbon, the window — is decoration on top of that. These are the structures we run most often:

Rigid truffle trays

The classic format for custom chocolate packaging boxes: a rigid case wrapped in printed art paper with a moulded tray, paper divider or EVA insert cut to your piece footprint. Truffles, pralines and filled bonbons each get their own cell, which is what stops them knocking against each other in transit and scuffing the finish before the customer opens the lid.

Magnetic gift sets

A rigid outer with a concealed magnet flap, usually lined and trayed. This is the format we recommend for custom chocolate packaging boxes that are sold as a gift rather than a grocery item — the closure has weight, the lid opens slowly, and the inside surface is a second print area. Corporate and seasonal programmes choose it most.

Drawer and sleeve boxes

Sliding trays suit sampler sets where the customer should see every flavour at once, and folding cartons with a printed sleeve are the economical choice for single bars and multi-packs. We produce custom chocolate packaging boxes in both formats on the same run when a brand sells a bar line alongside a gift set.

Bar sleeves and window cartons

For chocolate bars the carton carries the brand while the foil carries the barrier, so the paper only has to hold print quality and shape. Window patching on custom chocolate packaging boxes is available where the bar itself is the selling point — and it is worth knowing early, because a window changes how the carton is glued and scored.

Keeping Custom Chocolate Packaging Boxes Intact: Heat, Grease & Aroma

Chocolate is fragile in three ways that ordinary gift packaging ignores, and all three show up after the customer has paid:

  • Heat and bloom. Above roughly 25 C cocoa butter starts to migrate and the surface blooms, which looks like a quality defect even though the chocolate is fine. A box cannot cool the product, but insert material matters: moulded pulp and uncoated paperboard buffer temperature swings better than dense plastic trays, and a close-fitting cell slows air exchange around each piece.
  • Grease and oil transfer. Cocoa butter and fillings migrate into uncoated board and leave translucent patches — usually on the tray, which is the first thing a customer sees. Where this matters we specify a coated or grease-resistant liner rather than pretending the same board works for every filling.
  • Aroma. Strong flavours — mint, coffee, chilli, fruit fillings — cross into neighbouring cells and into bare board. Separators between compartments and a barrier liner keep a dark truffle tasting like a dark truffle.

None of this is guesswork. On custom chocolate packaging boxes projects we ask two questions early — what the filling is, and where the box will be stored — and the answers decide the insert and liner specification, not the other way around.

Materials, Printing & Finishes

The materials behind custom chocolate packaging boxes are chosen for two audiences at once — the buyer who judges with their hands, and the food-safety rules of the market you sell into:

  • Board: greyboard for rigid cases and trays, folding carton board for sleeves and bar cartons. We work with FSC-certified paperboard as standard; our notes on FSC-certified paperboard explain what that does and does not mean.
  • Food contact: any surface that touches chocolate — tray, divider, liner, window film — is specified as food-contact safe for the destination market. The FDA food contact substances framework is the usual starting point for US-bound orders, and we will tell you which supplier declaration applies rather than asking you to take our word for it.
  • Printing: full-colour CMYK with Pantone matching. Chocolate sits in a category where dark reds, deep greens and metallics carry the price point, and those are exactly the colours that drift between runs — every job is checked against the signed proof.
  • Finishes: hot foil stamping, spot UV, embossing and debossing, matte or soft-touch lamination, and laser-effect papers. Foil on a soft-touch board remains the combination premium confectionery brands come back to.
  • Inserts: paper dividers, EVA, moulded pulp or thermoformed trays — compared in our packaging inserts guide.

Who Orders Custom Chocolate Packaging Boxes

Four groups order from us most, and they need different things from the same box:

  • Independent chocolate makers — small, frequent runs where volume does not yet justify tooling. MOQ 200 exists for exactly this stage, and it is the reason so many first orders here are a single flavour rather than a full range.
  • Confectionery wholesalers and importers — shelf-ready custom chocolate packaging boxes and display formats that survive stacking in a warehouse and still look right on a retail shelf.
  • Brands running seasonal and corporate gifting — fixed delivery dates, custom trays, printed messages inside the lid. The production calendar works the same way as our advent calendar boxes projects: the date you need it in hand decides when we start.
  • Cafes, hotels, patisseries and subscription sellers — presentation boxes in modest quantities, often alongside small-batch packaging for the rest of their range.

MOQ, Samples and Getting the Colour Right

Custom chocolate packaging boxes start at 200 pieces. The sequence we recommend for every project: we build your structure in plain board first, you load it with your actual chocolates, and only then do we print. A tray that is 2 mm too shallow is a free fix at sample stage and an entire wasted run after printing.

Artwork support for custom chocolate packaging boxes is free. If you work with a designer, we prepare dielines and specifications for them; if you do not, our team lays out the panels from your logo and brand assets. Either way, nothing is manufactured until you have approved a printed proof.

How Ordering Works

Three steps, the same on every box we produce:

  1. Send your piece dimensions or an existing box. We come back with the structures that fit and say plainly where a standard format will not work for your filling.
  2. Approve a physical sample. Plain structure first, printed proof second — you hold the box, loaded, before committing to production.
  3. Production with photo QC. Five inspection checkpoints from incoming board to final packing, with photos at each stage, then export shipping or delivery to your forwarder.

Custom Chocolate Packaging Boxes — FAQs

What is the minimum order for custom chocolate packaging boxes?

200 pieces, the same minimum as our full range. Trays, dividers and sleeves are produced as separate components, so the MOQ applies to the finished set rather than to each tray.

Can you cut the tray to fit chocolates we already make?

Yes — it is the usual starting point. Send us the piece footprint, height and how many pieces per box, and the insert and outer case are designed around your existing product so you are not changing your moulds or your recipe.

Do you offer food-safe and grease-resistant options?

Yes. Every surface that touches chocolate can be specified as food-contact safe, and fillings that migrate oil need a coated or grease-resistant liner rather than bare board. Tell us the filling and the destination market and we will specify the material that fits both.

Can the box be printed inside the lid?

Yes, and for gift sets it is usually worth it — the inside of the lid is the second thing a customer sees after opening. It adds one printing pass, so we quote it as a separate line rather than folding it into the unit price.

How do you keep colours consistent across reorders?

We keep colour records per client — board grades, ink references and the approved proof for every job. A reorder the following season is matched against those records instead of being re-matched by eye, so your custom chocolate packaging boxes stay the same colour year after year.

Can chocolate packaging be plastic-free and recyclable?

Paper structures, paper dividers and water-based coatings can be fully paper-recyclable. Where a barrier or a grease-resistant liner is genuinely required, we will tell you honestly what that means for recyclability in your market rather than claiming a plastic-free result the liner cannot deliver.

Ready to Start Your Chocolate Packaging Project?

Send us your piece dimensions, the filling type and the quantity you have in mind, and we will come back with structure options for custom chocolate packaging boxes, a sample plan and a written quotation — usually within 24 hours. If you are also packing tea or a second range, the same production run can carry both — see our custom tea packaging boxes page for how that works, or our custom wine packaging boxes page if the set includes a bottle.
