Custom Wine Packaging Boxes — Bottle Inserts, Gift Sets & Transit Protection
A wine box carries a product that weighs more than almost anything else in gift packaging, and it fails in a way customers do not forgive: a cracked bottle or a scuffed label. We manufacture custom wine packaging boxes for wineries, spirits brands, importers and gifting programmes — rigid gift sets, magnetic flip-top cases, drawer structures and reinforced shippers, all developed around your actual bottle. Runs start at 200 pieces with free samples, so you can load a real bottle and shake the box before production starts.

Structures We Build for Custom Wine Packaging Boxes
The bottle decides the structure, not the other way round. These are the formats we run most often, from one-bottle retail gifting to multi-piece presentation sets:
Lid & base bottle sets
The workhorse format for custom wine packaging boxes: a rigid two-piece case with a cut insert that locates the bottle at the shoulder and the base. It is the structure retail buyers expect for single-bottle premium gifting, and the one that stacks predictably in a warehouse.
Magnetic flip-top cases
A rigid case with a concealed magnet flap that opens to present the bottle lying down, usually with a printed inside lid. This is the format we recommend for custom wine packaging boxes sold as corporate gifts, because the opening moment is the part the recipient photographs.
Drawer and double-door sets
Sliding trays and twin-door structures suit sets that hold more than a bottle — two glasses, an opener, a tasting booklet. Every cavity is designed as part of one insert rather than added separately, which is what keeps a heavy bottle from pressing against the glass compartments.
Cylinder and tube cases
Rigid tubes give a single bottle near-perfect radial protection and a strong shelf silhouette. They are also the easiest format for custom wine packaging boxes when the bottle is unusually shaped, since the cradle is built to the shoulder rather than to a rectangular footprint.
Corrugated shippers
For e-commerce and wine clubs, custom wine packaging boxes travel inside a corrugated outer that does the protection — the presentation box stays pristine. We quote them as a pair, because a beautiful box that arrives dented is a refund — and the shipper, not the gift box, is what prevents that.
Holding the Bottle: Weight, Movement and Transit
A 750 ml bottle weighs roughly 1.2 to 1.5 kg, and a magnum or a heavy premium bottle is substantially more. That single fact changes how custom wine packaging boxes have to be engineered, and it is why a box design copied from a cosmetics project usually fails here:
- Support at two points, not one. An insert that only cradles the base lets the bottle lean and strike the lid. We design contact at the shoulder and the base so the bottle cannot rock, and we check how easily it comes out — too tight is a customer complaint, too loose is a breakage.
- Board thickness follows the weight. Greyboard that feels luxurious around a candle is not enough under a bottle. Tray depth, board grade and glue area are chosen for the load the box actually carries when stacked.
- Transit is tested, not assumed. Distribution testing such as the ISTA procedures exists precisely because drop and vibration damage is predictable. Where a client needs evidence for a retailer or a marketplace, we will tell you what can be documented rather than claiming a test we did not run.
- Shipped flat, stored tight. Foldable rigid boxes for custom wine packaging boxes cut shipping volume substantially versus fully assembled cases, which matters when a container is priced per cubic metre.
Materials, Printing & Finishes
Wine and spirits packaging sells on touch, so the surface of custom wine packaging boxes matters as much as the structure — but only after the structure works:
- Board: greyboard for rigid cases and trays, folding carton board for sleeves and cartons. We work with FSC-certified paperboard as standard; our notes on FSC-certified paperboard set out what that does and does not mean.
- Textured and speciality papers — linen, soft-touch, metallic and recycled-effect stocks. Deep embossing on a textured wrap is the finish premium spirits brands return to most, and it hides handling marks better than a gloss surface.
- Printing: full-colour CMYK with Pantone matching. Deep burgundy, forest green and metallic gold are the colours this category lives on, and they are exactly the ones that drift between runs — every job is checked against the signed proof.
- Inserts: folded paperboard, EVA, or moulded pulp. Paperboard is the recyclable option, EVA gives the tightest cavity for heavy or oddly shaped bottles — compared in our packaging inserts guide.
- Accessories: ribbon pulls, fabric linings and metal nameplates can be added, but we will say plainly when an accessory compromises how well the insert holds the bottle.
- What we do not make: wooden and leather cases. Some suppliers offer them; we produce paper-based custom wine packaging boxes only, and it is worth knowing that before you compare quotations rather than after.
Who Orders Custom Wine Packaging Boxes
Four groups order from us most often, and the box they need is rarely the same one:
- Wineries and estates — single-bottle gift cases and cellar-door retail boxes, often in modest quantities per label. MOQ 200 is what makes a small release viable.
- Spirits brands — whisky, gin, rum and cognac producers whose bottles are heavier and whose presentation set may include glasses or a stopper. Here the insert is the project.
- Importers, distributors and retailers — shelf-ready sets and shippers that survive container freight and still look right on a retail shelf, frequently reordered on a fixed annual cycle.
- Corporate gifting and DTC wine clubs — fixed delivery dates and repeatable production. The planning logic is the same as our advent calendar boxes projects: the date the box must be in hand decides when production starts, and if you also ship chocolate or confectionery alongside wine, the same production run can carry chocolate packaging boxes too.
MOQ, Samples and Getting the Fit Right
Custom wine packaging boxes start at 200 pieces. The sequence matters more here than in most categories: we build the structure and insert in plain board first, you send us a real bottle, and we check the fit, the lid clearance and how the bottle comes out — then we print. A cavity that is 3 mm out is free to correct at sample stage and expensive to correct afterwards.
Artwork support for custom wine packaging boxes is free. If you work with a designer we prepare dielines and specifications; if you do not, our team lays out the panels from your logo and label artwork. Nothing is manufactured until you have approved a printed proof and a loaded sample.
How Ordering Works
Three steps, the same on every box we produce:
- Send bottle dimensions or a real bottle. Diameter at the widest point, height, weight, and how many pieces per set. If the bottle is unusually shaped, a photo or a drawing saves a round of questions.
- Approve a loaded sample. Plain structure first, printed proof second — you hold the box with your bottle inside before committing to production.
- Production with photo QC. Five inspection checkpoints from incoming board to final packing, with photos at each stage, then export shipping or delivery to your forwarder.
Custom Wine Packaging Boxes — FAQs
What is the minimum order for custom wine packaging boxes?
200 pieces, the same minimum as our full range. Inserts and trays are produced as separate components, so the minimum applies to the finished set rather than to each part.
Can you design the insert around a bottle we already use?
Yes, and it is the usual starting point. Send the bottle diameter, height and weight, and the insert and case are developed around your existing glass so you are not changing bottle suppliers to suit a box.
Do you make wooden or leather wine boxes?
No. We manufacture paper-based custom wine packaging boxes only — rigid board, folding carton, corrugated and tubes. We say this at the start because a quotation for a wooden case from another supplier is not comparable to ours, and you should be comparing the same thing.
How do you stop bottles breaking in transit?
By designing support at the shoulder and the base, sizing board grade for the loaded weight, and pairing the gift box with a corrugated shipper for e-commerce. Where documentation is required, we will tell you honestly what can be evidenced.
Can one box hold a bottle and glasses?
Yes — that is a multi-cavity insert, and we design it as one piece rather than separate trays so the weight of the bottle cannot press into the glass compartments. Tell us every item in the set and we will lay the cavities out together.
How do you keep colours consistent across reorders?
We keep colour records per client — board grades, wrap papers, ink references and the approved proof for every job. A reorder the following year is matched against those records rather than re-matched by eye, so your custom wine packaging boxes stay the same colour.
Ready to Start Your Wine Packaging Project?
Send us your bottle dimensions, the items in the set and the quantity you have in mind, and we will come back with structure options for custom wine packaging boxes, a sample plan and a written quotation — usually within 24 hours. If you are packing a second range as well, mention it: one production run can carry several lines. See our custom tea packaging boxes page for how that works.
